Letters to the editor for Feb. 28, 2026

    Epstein files

LETTER: We are not sending our best and brightest to Des Moines

LETTER: We are not sending our best and brightest to Des Moines

Vaccines are one of the greatest advances in public health in all human history. Who knows how many lives have been saved by polio, tetanus, whooping cough, tuberculosis, smallpox, measles, and more recently, COVID vaccines? Yet because of a few gullible people and charlatans who peddle unve…

LETTER: We want the truth about the Epstein files

LETTER: We want the truth about the Epstein files

Regarding Tim Murphy's letter to the editor Feb. 28. I agree with everything you said! Except for the part "Epstein files -- enough said."

LETTER: We must believe a world with love is possible

LETTER: We must believe a world with love is possible

In 1985 an epic bunch of musicians collaborated and recorded a hit single to relieve suffering from a famine in Ethiopia. Those don't know the song should cue up "We Are the World" on YouTube and watch the video of all these folks from the past (like Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Bruce Sp…

LETTER: Protect Iowa's water, support Leila Staton for Iowa House

LETTER: Protect Iowa's water, support Leila Staton for Iowa House

Water is essential to life – we drink it, cook with it, bathe ourselves and our kids with it and much more. That’s why our District 54 must act now to improve our water quality. Why, then, did our Iowa House representative, Josh Meggers, kill a Republican-introduced bill that would support w…

LETTERS: Let Israel have Shabbat in peace!

LETTERS: Let Israel have Shabbat in peace!

Another reminder not to forget our friends in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and all the land of milk and honey was given to Abraham and Sarah's side of the family. No matter how we spin it, it belongs to Israel. Israel is not going anywhere. All Israel wants is to live in peace, quiet, and secu…

Letter to the Editor: Condolences to Lexington

Letter to the Editor: Condolences to Lexington

To old and new residents of Lexington alike, we extend our sorrow for what has happened — again — to your present and our former community. All three of our children were well educated at Lexington Public Schools and have gone on to do great things. They had great experiences in Lex where, f…

Letter to the Editor: Condolences to Lexington

To old and new residents of Lexington alike, we extend our sorrow for what has happened — again — to your present and our former community. Letter to the Editor: Lexington's real strength is its locally owned businesses

Letter to the Editor: Lexington's real strength is its locally owned businesses

Like everyone in Lexington, we’ve been watching the news about the Tyson plant closure closely. It’s a major shift for our community, and it’s understandable that people feel uncertain. But I want everyone to hear this clearly: The people of Lexington are going to be OK. This is a strong, re…

Letter to the Editor: Hinrichs has '100% of what you want' for NPPD board

Letter to the Editor: Hinrichs has '100% of what you want' for NPPD board

Recently a letter was written by Matt Williams of Gothenburg touting Dawson Public Power District CEO Gwen Kautz as the ideal candidate for the Nebraska Public Power District 6. It was a nice gesture to give credit to Kautz, who has held the DPPD CEO post since 2012. If you know who Matt Wil…

Letter to the editor: NPPD candidate Kautz offers 'proven leadership'

I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for Gwen Kautz in her candidacy for the Nebraska Public Power District, Subdivision 6. Gwen’s candidacy is exciting news for those of us who value leadership grounded in experience, integrity and a deep commitment to the principles of public power.

Letter to the Editor: Senator responds to column on demolition program

Senator responds to column on demolition program

Letter: State, indeed, not for everyone

Letter: State, indeed, not for everyone

Our state continues to hemorrhage our youth. For some reason they don’t find this state attractive. Our government tries so hard to make it that way.

Letter: Hilgers acting as a senator

Letter: Hilgers acting as a senator

While Attorney General Hilgers has shown great skill at legislating on behalf of executive priorities, I prefer my elected representative — state senators — to do the lawmaking.

Letter: Smith doesn't reflect our state

Letter: Smith doesn't reflect our state

The new year is beginning, so it is time to turn the page. And, turning that new page should include a change in leadership in the 3rd Congressional District in Nebraska, i.e., replace Rep. Adrian Smith.

                              Letter: Airport has right leadership

                              Letter: Airport has right leadership

Red Way’s mismanagement of funds was a disappointment. The innovation that the Lincoln Airport leadership has demonstrated is a success.

Letter: What if the bucks weren't Biden's?

Letter: What if the bucks weren't Biden's?

Thank you Patty Pansing Brooks for your poem ("The slight before Christmas," Dec. 29). What a clever way to shine the light on the dissimulation of that one line by Gov. Jim Pillen: "I don't believe in welfare."

Letter: Sales tax hike a bad idea

Letter: Sales tax hike a bad idea

Gov. Jim Pillen has proposed raising the sales tax by 2 cents, which would make Nebraska's sales tax the highest in the nation. Although the details have not been released, the governor's office suggests this would drop the property tax from the highest in the nation to 27th.

Letter: How much is enough from Trump?

Letter: How much is enough from Trump?

Dave Kirby in his Dec. 31 letter to the editor asks, "How many is enough?" referring to the immigration crisis and placing the blame for it on the Biden Administration.

Letter: The naked truth about bad idea

Letter: The naked truth about bad idea

I was born in Norfolk. I follow Nebraska closely. I live in Houston, Texas, home of strip clubs and oil business. So believe me when I say taxing petroleum products going through your state is more lucrative than taxing attendees to strip clubs or strip clubs themselves.

Letter: The high price of the humanities

Letter: The high price of the humanities

Theater and concert ticket prices are out of control. The performing arts are almost exclusively for the rich.

Letter: A short-sighted decision on aid

Letter: A short-sighted decision on aid

Gov. Jim Pillen's decision not to apply for federal funding for children's summer food programs is short-sighted in dealing with fiscal responsibility. It was estimated that to manage the $18 million in aid it would cost $300,000. That leaves more than $17 million that would be spent in our urban and rural communities.

Survey: Impulse Buys May Be Ruining Some Americans’ Finances

Long gone are the days where impulse buying meant grabbing an unplanned candy bar or magazine in the checkout line. Now, social media makes it quick and easy for us to purchase just about anything with the click of a button, whether or not it’s in the budget. And for some Americans, it’s hurting them...

Holiday Shoppers Beware: 3 Traps to Avoid as Scammers Prepare

Black Friday is fast approaching, and shoppers are gearing up. The National Retail Federation expects more than 183 million people to shop over the weekend spanning Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday this year. But fraudsters are preparing for Black Friday too, looking for opportunities to steal your money or personal information. Before you dive into holiday...

Letter: Decision hardly a Christian one

Letter: Decision hardly a Christian one

Gov. Jim Pillen's refusal to apply for more than $18 million in federal funds to help feed our less fortunate children only proves two things: 1) He's even worse of a governor than Jiminy Ricketts, and 2) he's not "pro-life" at all. He's just "pro-fetus."

Letter: State must act on light rail plan

Letter: State must act on light rail plan

An article in the Dec. 26 issue of the Journal Star indicates that a primary focus in the 2024 session of the Nebraska Legislature will be to address the matter of workforce development.

                              Letter: Ukraine deserves nation's support

                              Letter: Ukraine deserves nation's support

American helped create NATO more than 70 years ago with the goal of preventing an attack from the Soviet Union/Russia. When the Russian attack came, the hammer fell on a country outside that alliance. Ukraine indeed took the entire brunt of the invasion, resisted, and turned the tide.

Letter: Pillen doing a great job

Letter: Pillen doing a great job

Jim Pillen will go down in Nebraska history as the greatest governor ever, and he is just getting started.

Letter to the editor: If these walls could talk

Letter to the editor: If these walls could talk

I write in response to the Dec. 9 article in the Lexington Clipper-Herald regarding the house at 305 E. 13th St. The article mentioned that the current residents are undertaking changes that might have deterred “less tenacious homeowners.”

Letter to the Editor: Prove pollsters wrong and go back to church

During the Republican debate, an exchange between Mike Pence and Vivek Ramaswamy talked about faith.

                              Thoughts on Voter ID

I don’t remember what number of the Legislators in Lincoln that are trying to pass but it is the Voter Act where we have to have an ID in order to vote. To me, that is unconstitutional! In the first amendment it says nothing should impede our free voting.
